Melanie Chasteen // Director of Community Engagement

Melanie has more than 20 years of experience in marketing communications and public relations including 12 within non-profit organizations. In her role as Director of Communications, she creates and executes the organization’s communication strategy, leads a broad range of public relations activities, oversees the annual statewide symposium and serves as a key ambassador for the organization. Before joining the Texas Campaign in November 2014, she served as the VP of Marketing and Communications for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas and as Director of Communications for the Center for Child Protection. Melanie earned her Bachelor of Journalism Degree with a focus on Public Relations from The University of Texas at Austin. Born and raised in Blue Bell country – aka Brenham, Texas – Melanie enjoys spending time with the four males in her life… her husband two sons and her dog Hank. Molly Clayton // Chief Advancement Officer

Molly Clayton is responsible for creating and managing a sustainable development strategy for the Texas Campaign. Prior to this role, she served as the first Executive Director of the Texas Partnership for Out of School Time (TXPOST), a nonprofit statewide network dedicated to increasing the quality and availability of afterschool and summer learning opportunities for Texas youth. Molly has also served as the Vice President of Statewide Initiatives for United Ways of Texas, managing efforts to address education, family financial stability, and disaster recovery issues. Her background includes 12 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, consulting, and business administration. She holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Manchester in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin. Gwen Daverth, PHD // President/CEO

Gwen is a recognized leader in action- based research on issues of equality, social policy and public health, having authored and co-authored journal articles, book chapters and publications on these topics. Before joining the Texas Campaign, she dedicated more than 17 years to the advancement of non-profits and served in a variety of general management and leadership roles. She holds a joint Ph.D. in Statistics and Gender Studies from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland where she was also awarded two Masters and a certification from the Irish Enterprise Board for her work in Entrepreneurial Development. Her Bachelor of Arts degree, awarded with honors, is from the University of Texas at Austin. A mother of three and an avid traveler, Gwen has lived in 6 countries and visited more than she can count – typically with a baby strapped to her back. Lorraine Garcia // Development and Events Manager

Lorraine Garcia is from Pampa, a small town in the Texas Panhandle. After interning for the City of San Antonio, she found her passion for activism and empowering minority voices. She received her BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she was deeply involved in various clubs and organizations. Upon graduation in 2014, she moved back to Texas to gain some hands-on experience in community work, serving Latinx communities. After organizing in South Dallas, she moved to Austin where she gained first-hand experience at the Texas Capitol. An avid supporter of women’s rights, Lorraine then served as the Development Coordinator at Annie’s List before joining the team at the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Hoda Sana // Director of Linkage to Care

Hoda oversees the Texas Campaign’s Youth Friendly Initiative, working to increase the number of youth accessing high-quality comprehensive healthcare across Texas. She received her PhD in Maternal and Child Health at the University of Maryland where she was awarded the Chae Award for most distinguished research on social and health disparities in underserved communities. Dr. Sana also holds a Masters in Public Health from George Washington University where she conducted research in rural villages in Afghanistan and Pakistan focusing on high risk patient outcomes in mobile clinics. Her novel research has led to large scale programmatic changes both internationally and domestically. A self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, she is a true foodie. When she isn’t exploring the latest food trends, she enjoys flying kites, reading comic books, and was a former college athlete at Creighton University. She led her rugby team to many victories and played as an alternate for the City of Omaha’s women’s rugby team. Email Hoda at Hoda@txcampaign.org.

April L. Borkman, MA

April Borkman resides in Charleston, SC where she works as the Director of Operations for the EMPOWERR Program at the National Crime Victims Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. April has worked for the past 10 years on multiple HIV, STD and unplanned pregnancy prevention projects focusing on minority youth in the Lowcountry. She graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2000 and then went on to receive a Master’s in Clinical Counseling from The Citadel in 2006. It was during her time in graduate school that April became interested in working in teen pregnancy prevention. She became a graduate assistant on a New Morning Foundation funded project called It’s Up to Me. After receiving her Master’s degree, she moved to Beaufort, SC where she worked as the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coordinator at the Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) for two years. While in Beaufort she served as co-chair of the Together for Beaufort’s Reducing Births to Teens Alliance and the Beaufort County Health Advisory Committee. Upon her return to Charleston, she began work with the Charleston Teen and Family EMPOWERR Program. April has also served as the co-chair of the Charleston County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council and is a current a member of the Charleston County Health Advisory Committee. April is also a trained facilitator of several evidence-based teen and unplanned pregnancy interventions. In her spare time, she also enjoys volunteering for social rights and animal welfare projects and traveling with her husband.

Dr. Suzan Boyd

Dr. Suzan Boyd led the SC Campaign as Executive Director through its period of growth from 2002 – 2007 and now resumes her board service as an emeritus member. Her close to 30 years of public health leadership includes roles in management and primary care activities at Brookside Park Family Life Center in Boston, as Vice President of Ambulatory Services at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, and as Director of the MHA Program at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. In 2009, Suzan was honored with the South Carolina Great Friend to Kids Award from EdVenture Children’s Museum.

Angelica “Lica” Colwell, M.S.

Angelica “Lica” Colwell, M.S., Board Chair, is a Registered Patent Attorney who practices in the areas of intellectual property, business litigation, and other litigations involving complex medical issues. Lica came to Nexsen Pruet from Marshall & Melhorn, LLC in Toledo, Ohio, where she gained experience in the defense of medical malpractice claims brought against physicians, hospitals, and healthcare facilities. She is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology and a Master of Science in Microbiology. In addition to rearing her young daughter, Lica volunteers with the Charleston County Guardian ad litem program. As a volunteer guardian ad litem, Lica investigates cases of alleged child abuse and neglect and makes recommendations for orders that could be issued by the Family Court. Prior to practicing law, Lica earned a Master of Science degree in Microbiology and performed medical research at The Medical College of Ohio in the areas of immunology and molecular biology.

Dr. Vaughn CroweTipton

Dr. Vaughn CroweTipton is Associate Vice President for Spiritual Life, Associate Professor of Religion, and University Chaplain at Furman University. Formerly the senior pastor at Auburn First Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama, Dr. CroweTipton also taught in the religion department at Auburn University, as well as Mercer University, Brewton-Parker College and Macon College. He has served as senior pastor at Northwest Baptist Church in Ardmore, OK, senior chaplain at Methodist Children’s Home in Macon, GA, and pastor of Loveview Baptist Church in Hillsboro, TX. He has published numerous articles, edited several books, and serves as a conference speaker. A graduate of Mississippi College (B.A.), he holds the M.Div. degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Baylor University. Dr. CroweTipton has also done postdoctoral study at Oxford University.

Debbie Whittle Durban

Debbie Whittle Durban is a partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP and works in both Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC. With 14 years experience, Debbie practices in the areas of labor and employment law, ERISA, ADA compliance, trade secrets,and business litigation. In addition to serving on the SC Campaign board, Debbie lends her time to the Employment and Labor Law Specialization advisory board and the SC Bar Employment and Labor Law board. She participates in several professional organizations and was recently honored by South Carolina Super Lawyers (2010 – 2012) and The Best Lawyers in America – Labor and Employment Litigation (2013-2014). Debbie obtained her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999 and was a member of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education during the mid-nineties.

Don Flowers

Don Flowers served as the first-ever Board Chair of the SC Campaign from 1994-1996 and now holds the title of Member Emeritus. Rev. Flowers is currently the pastor of Providence Baptist Church on Daniel Island where he has served for the past 10 years. Prior to serving at Providence Baptist, he was the Minister of Youth and Activities at First Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. He received his BA in Religion from Wake Forest University in 1980, a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1985 and a Doctor of Ministry from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in 2000. While a student at Emory, he focused his work on sexual ethics for parents, which ultimately was the topic of his dissertation.

Dr. J.R. Green

Dr. J.R. Green, Board Vice Chair, is currently the Superintendent of Fairfield County School District. He previously served as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for Chesterfield County School District and as principal of the Palmetto Gold Award winning Central High School in Pageland, SC from 2004-2008. He is a 1991 graduate of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. His academic accomplishments include a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, a Masters of Art in Teaching Business Education, a Masters in Education Administration, and a PhD in Education Leadership. J.R. was a 1989 initiate into the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and is currently a member of the Omicron Iota Lambda Chapter.

Cathy Hazelwood

Cathy Hazelwood is Deputy State Superintendent for the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE). Prior to her position with the SCDE she was General Counsel for the State Ethics Commission for fifteen years. Cathy graduated from Erskine College in Due West, SC and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Cathy is married to Jeffrey Ruble and they have two children and are expecting their first grandchild in November 2016.

Dr. Melisa Holmes

Dr. Melisa Holmes, Co-Founder of Girlology, is a mother, physician, author, speaker and passionate advocate for girls’ health, comprehensive sexuality education, and family communication. She started Girlology with her friend and colleague, Dr. Trish Hutchison, because there wasn’t enough time during medical office visits to discuss everything that pre-teen and teen girls wanted and needed to discuss. Since the first program in 2003, Girlology has grown into a nationally recognized and trusted brand that uses books, a web community and public forums to promote honest and meaningful dialogue about body image, self-confidence, health, sexuality, and relationships. Dr. Holmes graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in drawing & painting. She attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia, and then completed her internship and residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia. Representative Jenny Horne

Representative Jenny Horne represents district 94 in the South Carolina House of Representatives and also practices law in Summerville. In 1994, Horne graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina Honors College and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, she worked for four years in the State House as a page and legislative aide. She graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1997 where she served as Associate Articles Editor of the South Carolina Law Review and was inducted into the Society of Wig and Robe. After law school, Horne clerked for federal trial judge Margaret Beane Seymour. She has worked in private practice in law firms in Columbia and Charleston and now practices at her own firm in Summerville, where she is also very active in her community. Horne has served as the volunteer Executive Director for Communities in Schools of Dorchester County, a non-profit organization committed to lowering the drop-out rate by offering free after school programs for at-risk middle school students. She is a former member of the Board for Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union and past president of the South Carolina Women Lawyer’s Association. Horne is a graduate of the Diversity Leadership Institute at Furman University and a member of the Liberty Fellowship (class of 2011).

Jil Littlejohn

Jil Littlejohn was born and raised in inner city Atlanta, Georgia. She currently serves as the first female president and CEO of the Urban League of the Upstate. She also serves on the City Council of Greenville, and has served as a member since 2009. In addition to her executive roles, Jil is a 2015 graduate of Municipal Association of South Carolina’s Municipal Elected Officials Institute. She has also been recognized as a Women Making History Honoree, Greenville Magazine Top 50 Influential People, Ebony Magazine Top Young Leader Under 30, Greenville Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year Finalist, Greenville Link Magazine’s Top 50, and Greenville’s Best & Brightest Under 35. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jil is also the founder of the Talented Tenth Greenville Leadership Conference.

Sue Rex, Ed. D.

Sue Rex, Ed. D., Immediate Past Board Chair, was a public education teacher and professor for more than 30 years with an emphasis in special education and at-risk students. She has co-authored 12 books and conducted workshops throughout the country on school bullying, student self-control, boys’ education, attention deficit disorder and reaching unmotivated learners. Rex has received numerous awards for her work including the S.C. Counselors’ Humanitarian Award, President George H.W. Bush’s Point of Light Award and the Jefferson Award for Public Service from Jefferson Pilot.

Dawn Staley

Dawn Staley, head coach for USC Women’s Basketball, has been at the helm of the Gamecocks for the past six seasons. She has received many honors and awards including National Coach of the Year (2014, Basketball Times) and SEC Coach of the Year (2014, Coaches and AP). Her 97 overall wins in the last four seasons marks the most successful four-year stretch in program history. In addition to her successes on the court, Staley has had equal impact on the communities in which she lives. Following her retirement from the WNBA, the league began awarding the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award in 2007, honoring the player who best exemplifies the characteristics of a leader in the community in which she works or lives. Staley lives that mantra daily not only through individual appearances and encouraging her teams to pursue community services opportunities, but also through co-founding INNERSOLE, an organization which aims to provide new sneakers to children who are homeless and/or in need. After creating The Dawn Staley Foundation in Philadelphia, which was aimed at giving inner city children positive input through after school programs, Staley was eager to find a way to fill a need in her new hometown of Columbia.

Dr. Grant Warren

Dr. Grant Warren, a board certified OB/GYN at Piedmont Women’s Healthcare in Spartanburg, SC rejoins the board after previously serving two full terms. A native of North Carolina, Grant received his medical degree from East Carolina University School of Medicine and completed his OB-GYN internship and residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and specializes in urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse, and Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS).
